Origin

The Ragdoll was developed in California in the 1960s by Ann Baker, who selected for a large, affectionate cat with a soft semi-long coat, blue eyes, and a tendency to relax when picked up. The name reflects the relaxed, floppy way many Ragdolls go limp when held.

The breed's colorpoint pattern, blue eyes, and gentle temperament quickly made it one of the most popular companion cats in the United States, including with Florida families.

Appearance, Colors and Patterns

Ragdoll kittens are born light and develop their colorpoint pattern over weeks and months. The points, the ears, face, legs, and tail, darken against a lighter body. Eyes are always blue.

Common patterns include Colorpoint, Mitted, and Bicolor, in colors such as Seal, Blue, Chocolate, and Lilac. A Seal Bicolor Ragdoll has a striking white face with darker points, while a Blue Mitted Ragdoll has blue-grey points with white mittens on the front paws.

Personality

Ragdoll kittens are famously affectionate, social, and people-focused. Many greet their families at the door and follow them from room to room. They often enjoy being held and will relax in your arms.

They are gentle with children and usually get along with polite dogs, making them a popular choice for Florida families wanting an interactive, loving companion.

Health and Genetic Screening

Responsible Ragdoll breeders screen breeding cats for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and select away from polycystic kidney disease (PKD). HCM screening and PKD-clear lines are expected questions before reserving a Ragdoll kitten.

Because Ragdolls are a larger, slower-maturing breed, ongoing veterinary care and a balanced diet support their long-term health.

Grooming and Care

The semi-long coat is surprisingly low-shedding compared with some longhaired breeds, but it still needs combing two to three times a week to prevent tangles and mats. Pay attention to the areas behind the ears and under the legs.

Regular nail trimming, ear checks, and a scratcher round out the routine. Most Ragdolls enjoy grooming once they are used to it.

Is This Breed Right for Your Home?

Ragdolls are ideal for families who want a cat that actively wants to be part of daily life. They suit Florida homes where they can live indoors, comfortably, with air conditioning.

They are not suited to homes where they will be left alone for very long stretches, because they are social and people-oriented.
